A Family’s Journey with a Deaf son.

Welcome to our family story, our life’s journey with our Deaf son.  My husband, Alex, and I have 2 children, Larry and Charisma.  Larry and his wife Amrit are both Deaf.  Their beautiful daughter Raveena is hearing.

Our story details how we discovered Larry was Deaf, our decision to move to the USA for his education, our plans, goals, challenges, how we overcame them and the miracles we received as rewards.  Alex and I hope our experience with parenting a Deaf child, his education, success in sports, his achievements in the Deaf community and his personal life can be an inspiration to help you on your journey.

Please download the free PDF and audio files on our story.  Let us know how our story relates to your life, your challenges, and your miracles.  We will gladly answer any questions you may have.

In a world where people with no physical limitations at all, spend a great deal of time excusing why they can not prevail, the perspective of those with greater challenges that are making it is valuable.

We want our kids to know, no matter what their challenges may be, with God’s help, and their work they can have full and happy lives. Finding others that believe in fighting and praying through their challenges, is a treasure. Finding those willing to share methods and tips, is an extra joy over and above the initial pleasure. We will be implementing the closed caption options for our babies. Even the ones without challenges will benefit.

At minimum, your story confirms for us, that life is a blessing, no matter what challenges you start with.

At maximum there are practical steps and strategies to help get our beloved little ones through a rough world with love and positive direction.

    Thank you!

I have been reading your blog, and find it to be so very inspiring. There isn’t anything that one cannot do if the desire exist, the willingness to put in the work required, and allowing one to be lead and directed by the Lord. It is a great and very encouraging story. I am sure that there are many families who are being encouraged by your family’s braveness, faith, trust, willingness to take risk, and the desire to succeed despite what seems as incredible odds.

Definitely a story that needs to be shared.

I down loaded the free PDF of your family’s story. It is amazing! It truly shows that a Deaf person can have a full life. Especially for my country where disability is viewed as inability. Very, very inspiring. I will definitely share this with my friends all over the world and especially in Africa.

I have known the Stephens family for 20 plus years and I have heard bits and pieces of this story over the years and once I started reading the story I could not put it down until I was finsihed. I too am from Trinidad and I know exactly what they experienced in Trini with Larry and I admired and respect Alex and Raz for their strength and perseverance with him. I can attest to the fact that Larry is a very special person that is driven and has accomplished so much in his young life and the sky is the limit for him. He has a beautiful wife and daughter and with such a strong family bond with his parents and his sister Charisma, I believe he can change the way Deaf people are still treated today and is a great example of what you can accomplish with a support system that does not take no for an answer.

Every parent wishes the best for their children. This desire crosses all boundaries, continental and cultural. I also left my cultural origins, striving to increase the options for my own children. Watching the Stephen’s family journey, allows me to observe interesting parallels between their story and my own. It is inspirational to see what they have achieved.

I have just visited some of the pages on your blog and have read your free download “Unimaginable Miracles.” My gosh, what a life your family has had! And what impressive achievements Larry has made. Congratulations to all of you! What amazing strength you all have.

I have seen other blogs from Deaf people and their families, but none have gone into nearly as much detail as your blog. Your writing style is so personal, warm and enjoyable! It is very inspiring how you all took your setbacks in stride and learned whatever lesson there was to learn in them.

In my opinion, one of the best things in your download was that you listed what you felt you did right, and what you wished you had done differently, in each situation. These insights will prove very useful to others who are just starting down the path you have already traveled.

I have just been checking out your website, what a great job and powerful too.

Your story of faith and courage was so moving to me, to give up all that you did initially in order to create a fulfilling life for Larry as a deaf child is mind-blowing! to see how much you and Raz have achieved personally and for the Deaf community is so inspiring to me. My complements by the way to whoever has created your website, I found it to be very user friendly from a blind point of view.

It was such a pleasure meeting you, Raz and Alex, at the Orlando EDIS Conference. You both share such a passionate success story of ‘Inspiration & Encouragement’, with others needing direction in raising a deaf child to their full potential, while unmasking their hidden talents / developing their skills. Your son looks like a handsome, successful young man, Raz ~ just like his dad.

Not having any direct contact on a daily basis with a deaf person, my story is more centered on a family who raised a [1 of 5 adopted children] daughter, who like your son has accomplished many goals in her life ~ due to supportive parents and a community network of support.

I only knew Julie from a distance, seeing her in the fellowship hall after Worship Service. One Sunday, Julie performed a solo on her clarinet, that was totally awesome ! When in fellowship, with many surrounding her and congratulating her on her performance, while being updated on what she accomplishing at school, she was able to tell them some, as she had been working with a Speech Therapist and was able to verbalize a limited amount of words. I commented to our Pastor how beautiful she had preformed the piece, with every note perfect.

I had recently moved to London, and was not acquainted with very many people in the congregation, therefore knew little about other members. Pastor Jean then informed me that she was deaf, and learnt how to play the instrument from reading notes and feeling the vibration of her wind instrument, along with the guidance of an A-1 Music Teacher. I was totally speechless in discovering the talent and skill in which Julie had played her clarinet.

So often it is a crying shame that others do not realize that whether a person has a handicap of hearing, loss of sight / limbs, diagnosed with a mental disorder of Downe Syndrome, etc., with proper support and encouragement many exceed that attitude in life that many able bodied individuals fail to come close to reaching.

The inner wealth we all can value, as the treasure stored in heavenly places, was demonstrated to me in our Church Sanctuary that Sunday morning, many years ago. Raz & Alex, your wealthy resource of beneficial information is so encouraging for parenting in all areas / challenges they are faced with, in raising children. Educating others on how to understand others with a handicap of any type whether visible or unseen, is also a big part played in your desire to help them understand special needs of fellow human beings. Anxious to read your book [just downloaded], so I can recommend ‘Your Family’s Story / Journey’ to others who will appreciate the inspiring message you are sharing so openly and world wide.

Best to you and your loved ones, throughout 2010 … and all the years of joy to follow. You are an amazing couple, to say the least.
